Eddie Freyer was starting to buckle under all the compounding forces. An unsolved case. Public scrutiny. The media’s savage appetite. Disappointment and flagging confidence from volunteers and Polly’s family. And most of all, the fact that somewhere out there, a little girl was still missing.

Polly was either alive and scared—or not.
